Friendship is such an easy, yet complex word. Let me start by defining “Friend”. To me, a friend is someone who loves you as much as they love themselves and is willing to go the extra mile to make you satisfied. I’ve observed that it is so difficult to make and keep friends these days. Maybe it’s because things happen a lot faster these days and we are all trying to keep up with the world around us that we don’t have time for one another.  Maybe it’s because social media has saturated our world to the extend that, we will rather just IM one another than drive over to where they are for a cup of coffee and a good chat. We’ve become so superficial and totally forgotten the benefit of real and actual human contact.

 I think it’s sad. No man is an island entirely of himself. No matter how rich or successful you are, you need friends. We need friends for the good and bad times because in life, we can never be guaranteed of sunshine every day.  On some days it rains and on some days, it just pours. Someone once told me, “To have a true friend, you have to start by being one’. As I pondered on those words, I realized how profound they were.

Sometimes we give ourselves excuses. “I’m busy”, “Must I be the one to communicate first?”, and “I don’t want to let people in because they will end up hurting me”. Truth is when you close your heart because you are trying to protect it; you end up shutting everyone out and being alone. As valid as our excuses are, they are friendship destroyers. Friendship is a two-way thing and as much as you secretly desire to have a true friend, who will be there for you, try being one and you will reap the rewards. The world around us is uncertain and gets really scary. Sometimes, we just need someone to tell us to keep moving and that everything will be okay.

I must admit I’ve not been the best of friends but I’ve decided to dive out there and be one. To rekindle old friendships and make new ones. So feel free to join me on my journey and also let me know what you think. Best Wishes and lots of love.
